1. Connecting Trello To Ninja Forms

To get started you will need the Trello and Conditional logic add-ons, a Trello account, and your own Trello developer credentials.

Installing the Conditional Logic and Trello Add-ons

Install and activate the Conditional Logic and Trello add-ons like you would any regular WordPress plugin. Their installation is almost exactly the same. To install any add-on, first, download the add-on from your account page under the Downloads tab. Then, follow these steps:

  1. In your WordPress Dashboard go to Plugins > Add New.
  2. Choose the “Upload” option at the top of the page.
  3. Click “Choose File” and navigate to the “zip” file you downloaded from your account on NinjaForms.com
  4. Click “Install Now”
  5. After the installation finishes, click “Activate” and you will be ready to work with the add-on you purchased. Repeat this step for each add-on you have purchased.

Make sure your license keys are entered in your WordPress Dashboard under Ninja Forms -> Settings -> Licenses, or you will not receive automatic updates for your add-ons.  For more information refer to our Installation Guide

2. How To Generate Trello Cards From Your WordPress Form Submissions

Assuming you have already created a form, that includes a card name and card description field navigate to Email & Actions to add the Trello action. Otherwise, check out our building a form refresher.

To add the Trello action click the blue/circle + icon at the bottom right and select Trello.

Begin setting up the action with the following:

  • Select the Organization
  • Pick the Board
  • Choose the List
  • Add the Card Name and Card Description. This can be done manually by typing in your own entry or programmatically through the form field using the merge tag selector.
    Trello Action Merge Tags
  • Attachment Links ( optional ).  Click on the media icon to open up the WordPress Media Library, to attach uploaded files from your WordPress server.
  • Optionally, assign Card Labels, and Card Members by opening up the Advanced drop-down and toggling on your selected label or member.

If you are not seeing your organization, board, or list values populate, you will need to double-check your developer credentials, as these are most likely incorrect.

✅  All you need to do now is publish your form and complete a test submission. You will know that everything is working when you see form submission appear as a Trello card. For in-depth troubleshooting, reach out to our customer support team as they are always happy to help.

3. How To Conditionally Generate Trello Cards From Your WordPress Form Submissions

The process of creating a conditionally generated card is very similar to the process laid out in 2. How To Generate Trello Cards From Your WordPress Form Submissions. This time, you will be adding a list field to the form, multiple Trello actions, and constructing conditions for the actions to be processed under.

First, Create a Select (dropdown), Radio List, or Checklist Field

To give your users a choice of where they want the Trello card to go create a field that allows them to choose one or more options from a set of predefined choices.  You can achieve this with a Select ( dropdown ), Radio List, Checkbox List, or Multi-Select field.

To add the desired field to your form click the blue/circle + icon at the bottom right. Drag-and-drop the field into place.  Add a label and value to each option that corresponds with either the organization, board, or list you want your Trello cards to be associated with.

WARNING: If you aren’t seeing a place to add values in your desired field make sure ‘Dev Mode’ has been enabled. Enabling this feature will give you access to advanced settings. To enable navigate to Ninja Forms > Settings > Advanced Settings > click ‘Dev Mode’.

Make sure you have added the values, not just labels to the options fields in your list.  Otherwise, you will experience mapping issues with Conditional Logic, so make sure those have been accounted for before you move on,

List field, with Trello lists included as options

Second, Set Up the Trello Actions

Create a Trello action for each organization, board, or list you wish to send your newly created Trello card(s). Add an action by clicking the blue/+ icon at the bottom right of the Email & Actions screen.  There is no limit to the number of actions you can have, so go wild.  Just keep in mind that excessive action use will SLOW your website down.  For more form action tips and tricks check out The Definitive Guide to Using Form Actions.

After you have added all the Trello actions that you think you will need, begin setting up each action with the following:

  • Select the Organization
  • Pick the Board
  • Choose the List
  • Add the Card Name and Card Description. This can be done manually by typing in your own entry or programmatically through the form field using the merge tag selector.
  • Attachment Links ( optional ).  Click on the media icon to open up the WordPress Media Library, to attach uploaded files from your WordPress server.
  • Optionally, assign Card Labels, and Card Members by opening up the Advanced drop-down and toggling on your selected label or member.

Third, Build Out the Conditions

Open the Conditional Logic dropdown found in each action.  This will help you determine the organization, board, or list the Trello card will go to.

Open the first dropdown to choose your field. Extend the second dropdown to reveal the conditional statement ( Has Selected or Does Not Have Selected ). Expanding the third dropdown will auto-populate values from the field you selected. Pick the value and then repeat the process with your subsequent Trello actions.

Once the form is submitted the submission data will appear as a Trello card. If you set up the logic correctly the results will appear in the correct Trello organization, board, or list upon submission. If you are not seeing the submission appear as Trello cards you will need to review your Trello action settings.  For in-depth troubleshooting, reach out to our customer support team as they are always happy to help.
