1. What is a Star Rating Field
A star rating field is a must have if you are collecting feedback from customers. Although there are various rating scales available, instead of a traditional numerical input, the Star Rating field offers a game-like elements (stars).
The Star Rating field in Ninja Forms offers a “line-of-stars” graphic to the user, from which they can select a rating from a range of your choice. When the form loads on the front end, it looks like this:
With this rating field, users can intuitively engage and select the number of preferred stars, which creates a sense of involvement and satisfaction. Clearly, the Star Rating field enhances the feedback process, making it both interactive and enjoyable.
2. How to add a Star Rating field to your WordPress form
To add a Star Rating field to your WordPress form, click on the blue circle button within your form builder to open the list of existing Ninja Forms fields. The rating field is located under the Miscellaneous fields.
There are two options: You can either drag and drop the Star Rating field directly onto your form, or you can simply click on the Star Rating field, and it will be automatically added to your form. The choice is yours!
Upon adding a Star Rating field to your form, you’ll see a range of settings this form field provides. The one we’d like to highlight, is the Default Value setting under the Display tab.
The Default Value
The Default Value setting holds a significant power. It allows you to pre-select the number of stars to be marked by default when the form loads.
Imagine a user leaving a feedback via an online form on your WordPress website. In the picture below, you can see how it will look like if the value is pre-selected (left) and when the value for the feedback is not pre-defined. Now let’s take a look at the advantages of pre-selected Star Rating field.
By providing predefined star ratings, you are guiding users’ behaviour without overly forcing a decision. The pre-selected feedback field nudges users towards specific choices.
Another advantage is the simplicity of the decision-making process. Offering a pre-selected value offers cognitive ease for your form visitors and makes it mentally easier to provide a feedback.
3. When to use a Star Rating field
The Star Rating field in WordPress is widely preferred for collecting valuable data across several types of forms designed for customer engagement. It serves as an excellent way to collect product reviews or feedback on services.
Consider the giant platform Amazon; everytime you purchase something from Amazon, you can leave a review using the Star Rating field. This field unquestionably provides a swift and visual means to showcase a product’s popularity and quality.

4. Redirect users to another page based on the number of stars
Imagine you are running a survey where you want to include a 5-star rating field in the form. However, if the customer rates their satisfaction as five stars, you want to redirect them to another page. On the other hand, if the rating is below five stars, the customer should stay on the current page and see a Thank You Message.
Consider another scenario: You are collecting reviews for your services, and if a user selects four or more stars, you want the submit button to direct users to the Google reviews link. But if a user selects three stars or below, you want to redirect the user to a Thank You Page on your WordPress site.
Both examples can be accomplished with the Conditional Logic add-on and the free Redirect action from Ninja Forms. Here is a quick video explaining how you can set up a conditional redirect based on the number of selected stars on your Star Rating field.
