But, effective segmentation really requires as much information about your subscribers as you can get.

Each post or page on your site has its own focus and subject matter. Knowing the post or page that a user was viewing when signing up for your newsletter can help you focus in on their interests.

That data, and quite a bit more, is capturable in your signup forms. In the following example we’ll walk through how to capture and send custom data to MailChimp in the form of the referring post or page. You can use these steps to send other metadata as well!

Step 1: Create a new field in your MailChimp account

Log into MailChimp and navigate to Lists > Settings > List Fields and Merge Tags. Here you can control what fields show up in the MialChimp action of your form.

Add a new field and give it a name like “Referring Page”.

This new field will now show up when you select this list for any MailChimp action back in your form builder.

Step 2: Set a new merge tag in the MailChimp action of your form

Head back to WordPress, open your form, and select your MailChimp action under Emails & Actions. Make sure you have the list selected that you just added the new field to. You’ll see the new field appear under List Field Mapping.

Next, click the merge tag icon to the right of that field. Select WordPress from the list, and click the {wp:post_url} merge tag.

Now anytime this form is submitted, you’ll pass the URL of the post/page it was submitted from into MailChimp!

Replicate the steps above to gather interest data about your users and breathe new life into your campaigns

Being able to send custom data to MailChimp gives your campaigns an edge without making signups more complicated. It’s a win-win. This technique isn’t necessarily limited to MailChimp, either. For any of our email marketing integrations that allow new fields to be added to lists, you should be able to replicate these steps.
