WordPress Accessibility Day 2022

Along with being one of the most versatile and popular content management systems in the world, WordPress has also proven to be a warm community that values inclusivity. Nothing makes this more apparent than the upcoming WordPress Accessibility Day, an event that explores the many ways to make WordPress websites accessible to people of all ages, abilities, and technical skills.

Event Details

This year’s Accessibility Day (the second in history) is an entirely virtual event taking place on November 2 – 3, 2022. Even more exciting, it’s 100% free and open to everyone. The 24-hour conference will consist of 25+ presentations on accessible coding, design, and UX. The presentations will be streaming live on the event website. Naturally, live captioning, and American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting are both available.

Can’t make the live event? Don’t worry — all presentations will be available on YouTube after November 3. Be sure to check out the presentations from the 2020 event as well.

Why Accessibility?

Man assisting a blind woman using a laptopBillions of people worldwide have disabilities that make navigating websites more challenging. Blindness, deafness, dyslexia, and epilepsy are just a few examples. There are also plenty of users without disabilities who require more assistance, including the elderly. Coding and designing with these needs in mind are essential for inclusivity.

And in some cases, website accessibility is now required by law. In March 2022, the Department of Justice announced that websites are covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This means that public businesses must make their websites accessible to people with disabilities.

But accessibility isn’t just about disabilities. In fact, it benefits everyone. Websites that are organized logically with easily readable colors make life — and the power of the internet — more seamless for every single user.

Get Involved

If WordPress Accessibility Day speaks to you, or you have ideas on how to make sites more accessible, there are several ways to get involved. Calls are still open for speakers, volunteers, and sponsors. You can also donate to the event, which helps secure accessibility services like live captions and transcription and payment for speakers.

So mark your calendars, and be sure to tune in on November 2, 2022, a day that paves the way for equality.
