2003 was a memorable year for many reasons, including the conclusion of the Human Genome Project, Michael Jordan’s retirement, and the premiere of the Ellen DeGeneres show. But for us WordPress community members, the most important event in 2003 was the launch of WordPress.
And that’s why 2023 is so special: WordPress is turning 20! The past two decades have been revolutionary, with WordPress growing from a simple blogging platform to the world’s most popular content management system. This evolution is worth celebrating, not only for the platform’s many technological and UX enhancements but also for its thriving and diverse community.
This year is truly a milestone, and the entire community is encouraged to celebrate!
Details on the 20th Anniversary of WordPress
As announced during Matt Mullenweg’s annual State of the Word address, WordPress is officially turning 20 on May 27th, 2023. According to the anniversary announcement, several WordPress events will lead up to the big day, with ample opportunities to join in.

Plan Your Celebration
You don’t have to sit and wait for the official events; anyone is welcome and encouraged to plan a WordPress anniversary celebration. Whether you host a party, run an educational campaign, or lead a hackathon, fellow WordPress users want to hear about it.
