I hate to break it to you, but not everyone who signs up for your email list will be interested in everything you send them, especially if you offer a variety of products or services.
So instead of working harder, managing multiple audiences with hundreds or even thousands of subscribers, work smarter by employing the help of Mailchimp groups to your WordPress form.
In this article, I will show you three easy ways to add a Mailchimp group to your WordPress form and let me tell you; It is a lot easier than you think. All you need to get started is Ninja Forms, our Mailchimp add-on, and a Mailchimp account.
What is a group, and what is the difference between a group and a segment?
According to Mailchimp, groups are a collection of contacts categorized by their interests or preferences. Segments are a way of taking those groups and filtering or dividing them into similar contacts.
Groups are what you use to organize Mailchimp subscribers ( using our WordPress form builder ), while segments manage your groups ( via the Mailchimp CRM ).
The quick and dirty guide to setting up Groups in Mailchimp
To begin, login into your Mailchimp account. After that, click on Audience found in the Mailchimp menu to your left.
Next, select your audience by clicking on the Manage Audience dropdown and choosing Manage Contacts. After that, select Groups from the list or the Manage Contacts dropdown.
Click on the Create Groups button. Select the way you want the group options to appear on your sign-up form ( checkboxes, radio button, dropdown, or don’t show ). Lastly, include a Group category, followed by any group names you want to be associated with that category.
The selection you make for the group options is how the field will appear using the Ninja Forms Mailchimp Signup form template. If you want to provide multiple options, leave the default checkbox option selected, otherwise, choose radio or dropdown instead.
1. Adding a Preselected Interest Group to your WordPress form
Install and activate your Mailchimp add-on and create a new form to start. Next, head over to the Email & Actions tab, and open the Mailchimp action by clicking on the blue gear icon. After that, look for the section titled, Preselected Interest Groups and enable the desired group name by setting the toggle to green.
Save, publish and test your form. If you did it right, your subscriber should appear listed under that chosen interest in Mailchimp.
2. Conditionally set Preselected Interests Groups to your WordPress form
First, install and activate the Mailchimp and Conditional Logic add-ons, and create a new form. Second, add a list field ( checkbox, radio, or select ) to your form that includes the group options created in Mailchimp.
Third, click on the Email & Actions tab. Add a Mailchimp action for every Mailchimp group option by clicking the blue/+ at the bottom right. Fourth, open the Mailchimp action by clicking on the blue gear icon. Look for the section titled, Preselected Interest Groups, and enable the desired group name by setting the toggle to green.
Fifth, open the Conditional Logic dropdown. Underneath Process This dropdown, select your group options list field. After that, pick the option from the list field that matches the chosen Preselected Interest Groups.
Repeat the process for the other Mailchimp options, and that’s it!
Save, publish and test your form. If you did it right, your subscriber should appear listed under that chosen interest in Mailchimp.
3. Setting up User Selected Interests with your WordPress form
To get started, install and activate your Mailchimp add-on. After that, create the Mailchimp Signup form starter template. You will need the interest IDs that generate from the template to continue.
Once the template has finished, review your form and make sure a group list field exists that contains your Mailchimp group interests. After that, set the list field to REQUIRED by turning the toggle green. Doing so will ensure that the subscriber appears in the chosen group upon form submission.
Finally, head over to the Email and Actions tab to review the Mailchimp action. Notice the User Selected Interests field has already been mapped to the corresponding group interest field. From here, no further action is required.
Save, publish and test your form. If you did it right, your subscriber should appear listed under that chosen interest in Mailchimp.
