Introducing the Core Leadership Team for WordPress

2022 brought us through multiple WordPress updates, most notably the major release of WordPress 5.9. It was a groundbreaking time but not a surprising one. WordPress is consistently improving, offering updates multiples a year, every year. 2023 will be no different.

But how? Who makes WordPress’ continual innovation possible?

We’ve written repeatedly about the incredible community behind WordPress, but, like with any successful project, a leadership team must guide contributors along the way. The WordPress team includes two groups, bringing immense value to the platform and the community.

The Core Leadership Team for WordPress

A core internal team takes the lead on all things WordPress. This group includes:

Matt Mullenweg

Matt Mullenweg, founder of WordPress.Co-founder of WordPress alongside Mike Little continues his long-time role as lead developer on the platform. Matt is also the founder and CEO of Automattic. Check out his 2022 State of the Word address here.

Lead Developers

Besides Matt, WordPress has a small team of lead developers. While community volunteers contribute to much of WordPress’ features and design, these developers lead the charge on significant decisions and implementation. The lead WP developers include:

Core Contributors

Core contributors include developers, designers, and users who monitor WordPress support forums, update documentation, review themes, plugins, and more.
