WordPress Officially in Beta — Test Today!

People working at WordPress eventAt its core, WordPress is a community.

Every new release, event, theme, and update is made possible through active contributors – users just like you. It’s a thriving ecosystem built on sharing ideas and adding value whenever and wherever possible.

There are plenty of ways to contribute to WordPress, and right now, the most significant need is beta testing. The WordPress 6.1 release team, led by Matt Mullenweg, recently announced the release of WordPress 6.1 Beta 2.

What is Beta?

Beta is a pre-release version of a site. Betas largely reflect the finalized site, but they require further testing before it can be officially released to the public. Users interact with the beta site, note any challenges, glitches, or bugs, and report them to the development team.

Think of beta as the soft opening of a restaurant: the time to work out any kinks with a select number of patrons before the restaurant is open to the general public.

Make WordPress Core offers complete information on WordPress beta testing.

How to Beta Test

Anyone can beta test for WordPress; no coding or web design skills are needed. There are three ways to get started. You can download the beta tester plugin, directly download the beta version via zip, or use the published WP-CLI command.

See the beta two announcement for full details on all three options.

Remember to back up your existing WordPress sites, and never install the beta version on an active, public-facing site. There are no guarantees of smooth functionality or design in a testing environment.
